Space & C4I
As the shape of the modern battlefield evolves, the role of Space and C4I (command, control, communications, computers, and intelligence) systems becomes increasingly important in the ability to effectively prosecute war and achieve victory. Today's warfighter depends on space-based technologies for command and control communications, advanced-technology sensors and weapon systems, and real-time intelligence to provide a decisive advantage in achieving mission success. The Department of Defense (DoD) vision for modern warfighting is joint, collaborative, and interoperable C4I environments enabling network-centric warfare. The results of this approach were visible in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Space-based military satellite communications (MILSATCOM) systems provide vital capabilities, and are a critical component of the C4I concept. These systems eliminate the range and line-of-sight limitations of conventional terrestrial radio systems, and enable immediate communication of combat support information and intelligence.
MILSATCOM systems consist of three distinct segments: Space, Control, and Terminal.
Space - this segment consists of both the launch facilities needed to place the satellites in orbit, as well as the orbiting satellite constellations themselves and their communications payloads.
Control - this segment is comprised of the ground-based monitoring and control infrastructure.
Terminal - this segment is comprised of the ground, airborne, and sea-based equipment that transmits and receives signals to and from the satellites. Depending on requirements, these terminal systems may operate on platforms such as fixed sites, ground vehicles, ships, and aircraft.
TopVue technology and services are used throughout these segments, to include the US Air Force Space & C3I office, US Navy Program Executive Office Space & C4I, and the US Air Force Global Positioning System (GPS) Joint Program Office. TopVue is also implementing technology within the MILSATCOM Joint Program Office. Within each of these critical offices, TopVue provides the core equipment baseline data system for acquisition and sustainment programs, enabling program collaboration and enhanced decision support. The range of functionality supported by TopVue technology and services includes management of acquisition milestones, contract data requirements lists (CDRLs), CDRL approval processing, configuration control board preparation and collaboration, hardware and software baseline management, and technical order management for supply-chain activities.
